Posted

Have you been feeling out of sorts lately? It could have something to do with your energy centers, more specifically, your root chakra, also known as the muladhara or 1st chakra.

The good news is that you’re about to learn everything you need to know about your muladhara including what exactly it is, why it’s so important, as well as how to open, heal, and balance it.

What Is The Root Chakra?

Let’s take a moment to go over exactly what chakras are. In short, chakras are energy centers within the human body. Corresponding to specific nerve bundles and organs, each chakra has a specific responsibility when it comes to maintaining our spiritual, mental, emotional, and even physical health.

With that being said, let’s move on to what makes maintaining a healthy 1st chakra so important.

For starters, the muladhara can be thought of as the foundation for all of the chakras, meaning if it’s not functioning properly, none of the others will either. However, this energy center does have its own specific responsibilities such as helping us feel grounded, safe, strong, and secure. Many people would agree that the biggest responsibility this chakra has is helping us not only feel like our basic needs are met, but to thrive while on our journey through life.

Aside from that, the 1st chakra is also responsible for providing us with spiritual and emotional balance. When taking all of these things into consideration it’s no surprise why the literal translation of muladhara is “the root of all things”.

Where Is The Muladhara?

The location of this energy center is at the base of the spine in close proximity to the pelvic area. Sitting at the base of the spine, it is the first of the 7 main chakras. It is believed that the energy from the muladhara is channeled upward through the spine so that it may reach the other energy centers within the human body.

This diagram shows the location of each of the chakras. The 1st chakra is located at the base of the spine.

Signs Of An Overactive Or Blocked Root Chakra

You might be surprised to learn that the muladhara can be unhealthy in more than one way. Being an energy center, it’s possible for it to become both overactive or underactive. Think of it as a spinning disk. You want to make sure it gets just enough energy to continue spinning. With too much energy, the disk will spin out of control. Without enough energy, the disk will stop and become unable to distribute its energy to your body.

When this energy center becomes overactive there is an excess amount of energy that is sent to the other chakras as well as the rest of the body. People with an overactive muladhara can experience a wide variety of symptoms some of which being physical and some of which being emotional or even psychological.

Here are the top signs of an overactive muladhara:

  • Anger
  • Agitation
  • The Urge To Hoard
  • Self-Centeredness
  • Bullying
  • Greed
  • Constant Need To Work

As mentioned earlier, this energy center can also become underactive, more commonly referred to as blocked. When our chakras become blocked, they lack the energy they need to function properly. Just as with being overactive, being underactive or blocked comes with its own set of negative impacts.

For example:

  • Fatigue
  • Sluggishness
  • Lower Back Pain
  • Poor Bladder Health And Complications
  • Poor Prostate Health
  • Poor Colon Health
  • Inflammation
  • Cramping
  • Issues With Extremities (Particularly On The Left Side Of The Body)

The above examples focus on the physical symptoms. However, there are also several psychological issues that can come into play when the muladhara becomes underactive or blocked.

The top psychological symptoms include:

  • Relentless Anxiety/Anxiety Disorder
  • Panic Attacks And Constant Fear
  • Feeling Threatened
  • Hypochondria
  • Paranoia
  • Mild To Extreme Depression
  • Anorexia, Bulimia, And Other Eating Disorders
  • Lack Of Self-Confidence
  • Indecisiveness

Keep in mind, these are just the symptoms provided by this particular energy center. Since this chakra is the foundation for all of the other chakras, an imbalanced, overactive, or blocked muladhara can cause other chakras to become imbalanced which has the potential to cause hundreds of other psychological, physical, emotional, and even spiritual complications.

Root Chakra Music Explained

You might be thinking that this all sounds a little too good to be true which is completely understandable. Let me ease your skepticism by taking a moment to explain exactly why meditation music containing specific frequencies can do so much to heal your chakras.

It’s long been known that music offers a wide variety of therapeutic values. However, you may not know that there are certain tones or frequencies that can be used to heal specific parts of our bodies, including our energy centers. They are called Solfeggio Frequencies and their use dates all the way back to 1050 A.D. These frequencies were commonly chanted by Gregorian Monks while they meditated. The goal was to provide themselves with spiritual awakening.

These days, after centuries of research, it has been discovered that there is a scale of six main solfeggio frequencies, each with their own specific healing benefits. The perfect frequency for root chakra healing is 396Hz. It’s believed that this frequency can help a person, let go of feelings of fear, anxiety, guilt, trauma, and more while creating a sense of being grounded, security, and having basic needs met in life.

Therefore, having this specific frequency playing in the background of meditation music can provide a person with all of the benefits of meditation plus much, much more without the need for constant practice and hours of sitting in an awkward position while trying to keep your mind clear of thoughts.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the root chakra responsible for?

The 1st chakra is responsible for providing us with a sense of being grounded, security, safety, and feeling as if our most basic needs are met in life. It’s also responsible for providing energy to the other chakras. If the Muladhara becomes blocked or imbalanced, the other energy centers can be negatively impacted. Failure to properly maintain this energy center can lead to a wide variety of health issues, emotional problems, psychological concerns, and even loss of spirituality.

Why is the root chakra blocked?

Chakras can become blocked or imbalanced when the energy flow to them encounters some type of barrier. The barriers can range from fear, trauma, pent up emotions, unhealthy eating habits, loss of connection with nature and the world around us, and even addiction. If the Muladhara becomes blocked, a person will typically feel ungrounded, unsafe, insecure, and as if their basic needs in life are not met.

What happens when your root chakra is balanced?

An open and balanced 1st chakra will cause a person to feel grounded and connected to the world. They will also be able to focus on the present moment, be in touch with and feel comfortable with their own body, live a life with stability, trust in the Universe to provide them with their needs, and become rooted in their own energy, plus so much more. There are a tremendous amount of benefits when it comes to maintaining a balanced Muladhara. Plus, when this energy center is balanced, it helps the other chakras function properly.

What does it feel like when your root chakra opens?

Since everyone is different, signs of this energy center opening can vary from person to person. However, there are common signs such as sensations of heat in the body, tingling around the base of the spin, or even the feeling of becoming heavier as you become more grounded. Some people may notice that their dreams become more vivid. In rare cases, some people may find it harder to fall asleep until their energy is able to settle in the correct location. Some people may also notice a slight gain in weight. However, this issue is usually only temporary.

How can I open my root chakra fast?

There are several different ways to open the Muladhara. However, without a doubt, the simplest and fastest way to begin opening this energy center is with meditations infused with solfeggio frequencies. Other fast but less convenient and cost-friendly methods include exercising, reiki healing, changes in diet, and affirmation exercises.
